Best generic modafinil brands ranked by quality
I've been ordering and comparing these generics since 2014. Here's how Modalert, Modvigil, Waklert, and Artvigil actually rank on quality.
Try Free Modafinil SamplesHow I ranked these brands
Ranking the best generic modafinil brands by quality takes more than vibes and Reddit threads. It takes documentation you can actually check.
A note on method, and on honesty: an earlier version of this page quoted a proprietary count of commissioned lab tests. Those numbers came down because the underlying test log isn't published here, and a claim you can't audit is worth less than one you can. What is verifiable: all four major generics come from WHO-GMP certified manufacturers, their batch certificates of analysis exist and can be requested, and generic approval itself requires demonstrated bioequivalence.
This ranking therefore leans on three things: manufacturer and batch documentation, the published quality literature, and 12+ years of my own ordering and daily use.
The consistent picture across batch certificates and published analyses: these generics are what the label says they are.
The checks that matter for any batch: purity, dose accuracy, dissolution, contamination, and heavy metals. The rankings below weigh those factors from the documentation and from long personal use.
The rankings, by the numbers
1. Modvigil (modafinil 200mg): The budget brand, and in my experience the most consistent performer for its price.
2. Waklert (armodafinil 150mg): The premium armodafinil option, made by Sun Pharma.
3. Modalert (modafinil 200mg): The most popular generic worldwide, and my personal daily driver for years.
4. Artvigil (armodafinil 150mg): The budget armodafinil, and the value pick of the pair.
The honest headline: the four brands sit close together. Their batch certificates put purity and dose accuracy at label claim across the board.
Which brand for which person
The quality documentation clusters tightly across brands, so choose by compound and feel rather than fear of fakes.
Modalert is the strongest-feeling modafinil for most people. Start here if you want the standard experience, and see my Modalert 200 review.
Modvigil feels slightly softer and costs less. It's the value pick, compared fully in Modvigil vs Modalert.
Waklert and Artvigil are armodafinil, the longer, narrower cousin. 150mg of armodafinil roughly matches 200mg of modafinil, with the differences covered in modafinil vs armodafinil.
My split: Modalert for heavy days, Modvigil for ordinary ones. Waklert gets the nod when I need a longer, later-peaking arc.
The manufacturers behind the brands
Brand names get the attention, but factories determine quality. All four generics come from large Indian manufacturers.
The names behind the blisters, Intas, HAB Pharmaceuticals, Sun Pharma, Healing Pharma, and Cipla, all run WHO-GMP certified plants.
Sun Pharma is the giant of the group, a company supplying regulated markets worldwide. HAB and Healing Pharma produce most Modvigil and Artvigil stock.
Batch failures do occur industry-wide; regulatory recalls and pharmacopoeial reports cite dose-accuracy misses, dissolution failures, and occasional contamination findings.
That risk is why I check batch documentation instead of assuming. Batches vary, and bad vendors matter more than bad brands.
How this review actually works
A ranking means little without method, so here's mine. Every vendor gets normal customer orders from me, placed without telling them who's buying.
The product side rests on the documentation trail. Each batch number on a blister ties back to a manufacturer certificate of analysis.
A COA covers the same core panel every time. Purity, assay, dissolution, uniformity, microbial counts, and heavy metals.
Assay is the number I read first, since it answers the question buyers actually ask. Does a 200mg tablet contain 200mg?
Dissolution matters more than people realize. A tablet that won't dissolve on schedule delivers its dose late or unevenly, whatever its purity.
These plants also answer to real regulators. WHO-GMP certification and supply into regulated markets mean their documentation gets audited by people with power to act on it.
And no vendor or manufacturer has ever paid for or previewed a word of this page, which is the part that keeps the opinion worth having.
Storage, shelf life, and batch variation
Quality at the factory can still be wasted in a drawer. A few storage habits protect what you paid for.
Keep tablets in their sealed blisters until the day you take them. The foil blocks the humidity that degrades tablets fastest.
Store the packs somewhere cool and dry. A bedroom drawer beats a bathroom cabinet, where every shower bathes your stock in steam.
Properly stored, modafinil is a stable molecule. My shelf life guide covers what expiry dates actually mean in practice.
Batch variation is the other lesson: when quality issues occur, they scatter across brands rather than clustering in one.
That means one flat experience doesn't condemn a brand. Note the batch number from the blister and see if the next box differs.
It also means brand loyalty has limits. The manufacturer matters, the vendor matters, and the specific batch matters most of all.
This is exactly why I keep checking batch documentation rather than declaring the question settled. Quality is a stream you sample, never a fact you learn once.
Checking a batch, up close
Summary claims are easy to quote and hard to feel. Here is what checking a batch actually looks like at ground level, with the documents anyone can request.
Find the batch number. Every blister strip carries one, printed along the foil edge. That number ties your exact strip to a single manufacturing run and its certificate of analysis.
Ask for the certificate. Manufacturers issue a COA for each run covering assay (dose accuracy), purity, dissolution, and heavy-metal screens. A vendor who can't produce one when asked has answered your real question.
Read two numbers first. Assay should sit close to 100 percent of label claim, and heavy metals should sit under pharmacopoeial limits. Those two catch most of what ever goes wrong with a batch.
Failures do surface somewhere in the industry every year, in recall notices and regulator reports. That is why batch-level checking beats brand-level faith: no name on the box exempts you from looking.

Are generic modafinil brands as good as Provigil?
Yes. Generic approval requires demonstrated bioequivalence, and manufacturer batch certificates consistently show purity at label claim. Generics contain the same active ingredient as Provigil at a small fraction of the price. The difference is branding and cost, not chemistry.
Which generic modafinil brand is the strongest?
Modalert has the strongest reputation among modafinil generics, and most experienced users agree it feels the most potent. For armodafinil, Waklert holds the same position. Strength differences between brands are smaller than differences between individual responses, so test on yourself.
Do generic modafinil batches ever fail quality testing?
Occasionally, yes. Batch failures happen across the pharmaceutical industry, with causes like dose accuracy outside range, heavy metals above limits, and dissolution failures. That's why buying from vendors with a track record matters, since a good vendor pulls questionable batches.
Modvigil ranked first, so why does anyone buy Modalert?
Consistency and subjective feel are different things. Modvigil takes the top spot on price-for-quality, but many users find Modalert feels stronger and smoother, which keeps it the most popular generic worldwide. Both hold label-claim quality in their batch documentation, so either is a solid pick.
How do I check the tablets I received are genuine?
Start with the blister pack: crisp foil printing, the manufacturer's name, a batch number, and an expiry date are all standard on legitimate Indian generics. Blurry printing or missing batch details are the classic counterfeit tells. Compare tablet markings against the manufacturer's published product images, and buy from vendors with a track record.
