What modafinil is
Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent. It is a prescription medicine used to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness. It is not a classical stimulant like amphetamine. It promotes alertness through a different mechanism: one that acts on the brain's wake-regulating systems and is still only partly understood. In the UK, its licensed indication is narcolepsy.

1. NHS route. Modafinil for narcolepsy is normally started by a specialist (neurology or sleep clinic) after diagnosis, then continued in primary care under a shared-care arrangement.
