Modafinil is FDA-approved for shift work sleep disorder. I used it during underground mining night shifts at Sunrise Dam. Here's what worked and what didn't.

Why Night Shift Kills Your Focus

Modafinil for night shift workers isn't some off-label experiment. It's FDA-approved for shift work sleep disorder, and there's a good reason for that. Night shift destroys your circadian rhythm and drags your cognitive performance down with it.

Your brain is wired to sleep when it's dark. Working through the night fights millions of years of evolution. Willpower alone can't fix that mismatch.

Killgore et al. 2008 showed that sleep deprivation impairs judgment, reaction time, and emotional regulation. If you've done nights, you already know this. The data just confirms what the 3am brain fog tells you every shift.

I spent years doing underground mining at Sunrise Dam gold mine in Western Australia. FIFO roster, 3:30am gym sessions, trying to function on broken sleep. Night shift wasn't a lifestyle choice for me. It was survival mode.

What Happened When I First Tried It on Nights

I first took modafinil during a night shift rotation in the early days. Somebody at the mine mentioned it, and I ordered some without doing much research. That was a mistake.

The focus hit hard. I felt alert and locked in. Then I spent four straight hours reorganizing my email inbox instead of doing the work I actually needed to do. Total waste of a shift.

Modafinil doesn't make you productive. It amplifies whatever you point it at. Point it at your inbox, and you'll have the cleanest inbox in the mine. Point it at your actual tasks, and you'll tear through them.

After that night, I started writing my three priorities on a sticky note before the modafinil kicked in. Simple fix. It changed everything about how I used the drug on shift.

How to Dose for Night Shifts

Take 100-200mg at the start of your shift. Not midway through. Not when you start feeling tired. At the start, before fatigue sets in.

Modafinil takes about 45-60 minutes to reach full effect. If you wait until 2am when you're already dragging, you've lost two hours of productive time and the drug will keep you wired well past your shift.

I've tested this over hundreds of night shifts across years of FIFO mining work. My protocol now is 100mg with food at the beginning of shift. One dose, no redosing, no "booster" halfway through.

The dosage guide covers the full range of options. For nights, simplicity wins. One dose taken early with food. Don't overthink it.

What 311 lab tests actually show

I've paid for 311 certificates of analysis on generic modafinil and armodafinil since November 2013. 294 passed. 17 failed. That's 94.5%.

The four brands I keep buying: Modvigil 95.9% pass (74 tests), Waklert 95.1% (61), Modalert 94.1% (85), Artvigil 93.4% (91). Average purity 99.2%. Average assay 99.7%.

Ten labs across three countries. $99,351 spent. I don't guess which tablet is real.

If you are taking a generic at 10pm so you can stay upright until dawn, that is the dataset behind the recommendation. I will not cite a batch I have not seen.

Protecting Your Sleep on the Other Side

The biggest risk of modafinil on night shift isn't the drug itself. It's what happens when you try to sleep afterward. Modafinil has a 12-15 hour half-life, and if you time your dose wrong, your daytime sleep is gone.

That's why you take it at the start of your shift, not the middle. A dose at midnight means the drug is clearing your system by noon. A dose at 4am means you're still wired at 4pm.

Blackout curtains aren't optional. Your bedroom needs to be cave-dark. I also take 400mg of magnesium glycinate before my daytime sleep. Abbasi et al. 2012 showed magnesium supplementation improved sleep quality, and I've found it works well for shift workers specifically.

Your sleep hygiene on modafinil matters more than the drug itself. Get that wrong, and you'll dig yourself into a fatigue hole that no pill can fix. The shift work sleep disorder guide goes deeper on building a sustainable night shift routine.

Frequently asked questions

Is modafinil approved for night shift workers?

Yes. Modafinil (sold as Provigil) has FDA approval specifically for shift work sleep disorder. It's one of three FDA-approved uses for modafinil, along with narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea.

When should I take modafinil for a night shift?

Take it at the very beginning of your shift with food. If your shift starts at 10pm, take your dose at 10pm. This gives you peak effect during the hardest hours and lets the drug start clearing before your daytime sleep window.

Will modafinil stop me sleeping after my shift?

It can if you time it wrong. Modafinil's half-life is 12-15 hours. Take it at the start of your shift, and it should be clearing by the time you need to sleep. Take it too late in the shift, and you'll lie awake. Blackout curtains and magnesium glycinate before sleep also help.

Can I take modafinil every night shift?

You can, but I don't recommend it. Tolerance builds with daily use and the effect weakens over time. I'd suggest 2-3 shifts per week max. Save it for your hardest nights or the first night of a rotation when the circadian adjustment hits hardest.
